Is it Possible to Experience Pregnancy Symptoms Before a Missed Period?

Yes! Some women can feel symptoms before their pregnancy test delivers a positive result.

While you may be tempted to use an early detection pregnancy test, note the accuracy printed on the box. You'll see that early detection tests are often only about 77% accurate six days before a missed period, and then the accuracy increases as you approach your missed period.

When is the best time to take a pregnancy test?

If you are wondering whether or not you're pregnant, the best time to test is after your missed period. This timing will allow the hormone hCG to rise to detectable levels so you can receive an accurate result.

While some pregnancy tests claim to provide accurate results earlier, waiting will reduce the chance of a false-negative result. If you receive a negative result and believe you're still pregnant, wait a few days and test again, or visit us for free pregnancy testing.

Why do I need an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds provide critical information that pregnancy testing does not. An ultrasound will tell you:

  • How far along you are (gestational age)
  • Whether your pregnancy is progressing with a heartbeat
  • The location of your pregnancy

An ultrasound can rule out issues like miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy or point you to necessary medical care if needed. If considering abortion, your pregnancy's gestational age will reveal your options.

Oasis Resource Center provides free limited obstetrical ultrasounds to provide this essential information to women considering their pregnancy options.
