Considering Adoption?

When women find that they are not ready or able to parent but do not want to abort, they may consider adoption.

Adoption is a selfless choice that involves carrying your pregnancy to term and then placing your child with a hopeful adoptive family. While it can be emotionally difficult, it can also come with the assurance of knowing you placed your child in a safe and loving home.

Modern Adoption Fits Your Plan

Adoption has changed over the years, enabling women to have many choices. Birth mothers can select an adoptive family and choose the adoption plan that fits their desired level of privacy and communication. They can also work with a reputable adoption agency to set specific terms.

Choosing an Adoptive Family

To be eligible for adopting a child, an adoptive couple or family must undergo background checks and home studies. These screenings are very thorough in Missouri and will give you peace of mind that the adoptive family can provide a safe home for your child.

If desired, you can review qualified adoptive families and choose the one you would like for your child. If you prefer not to select the family, your adoption agency can help with this step.

Adoption Plans

There are three types of adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed, ranging in the amount of contact and privacy you would like to have.

Open Adoptions

With an open adoption plan, you would be able to communicate directly with the adoptive family and child. This could mean phone calls, texts, letters, visits, etc.

However, keep in mind that open adoption plans are not legally enforceable in Missouri. So, it is important to be on the same page with your potential adoptive family about post-adoption contact. You can ask an adoption agency more about the nuances of our state.

Semi-Open Adoptions

In a semi-open adoption plan (sometimes called mediated adoption), you will only share non-identifying information with the adoptive family. You will communicate through a third party, such as an adoption agency or attorney, but not directly like you can in an open adoption.

This plan enables you to receive updates on your child with less involvement and more privacy.

Closed Adoptions

In a closed adoption, you remain completely anonymous and do not have any contact with the child or adoptive family. Some women may choose this plan for more privacy or because they feel it provides more closure.

Adoption Expenses

The adoptive family typically covers adoption-related expenses such as legal fees and medical bills not covered by insurance. Depending on state laws, you may be able to receive more assistance.
