An unexpected pregnancy can be an uncertain time for men, too. You may wonder what to do, what the future will look like, or how to support your partner best.

While it can be tempting to distance yourself from the situation or tell your partner you will support whatever she decides, we encourage you to get involved during this time. She needs you now more than ever.

4 Ways to Support Your Partner

Here are four helpful ways you can support your partner during her pregnancy.

1. Listen to Her

Sometimes, listening to your partner’s thoughts and feelings is what she needs in the moment. Her body is going through many changes, including an influx of hormones, which can lead to moodiness and mood swings.

Having a steady presence in her life to listen will make a difference.

2. Help Her Weigh Her Options

You and your partner are in this together, and you have three options: parenting, abortion, and adoption. It’s a decision that will impact both of you.

While pressuring your partner isn’t healthy for her or your relationship, you can express your thoughts and feelings, too. She will appreciate hearing from you instead of making the decision for both of you alone.

3. Support Her in Practical Ways

During pregnancy, your partner may feel tired, nauseous, or not like her usual self. Helping with errands, bringing her groceries, and doing some of the tasks she may not be advised to do while pregnant (ladders, heavy lifting, etc.) can help her relieve stress and feel supported.

4. Accompany Her to Appointments

If you can, go with your partner to her pregnancy appointments. It will help you feel like a part of the process, and she’ll appreciate the company.

At Oasis Resource Center, we welcome you to join your partner for her appointment. We will listen and provide support as you navigate this pregnancy and make a decision about your future with your partner. Schedule an appointment today!

5. Join the Fatherhood Class

Oasis offers a 14-week evening class to equip fathers to be Good Dads. Your partner does not need to be a client of Oasis for you to participate. The class is offered on Tuesday evenings and is taught by experienced dads who are there to provide you with additional tools and support in your parenting journey.
