Whether you’re in high school, college, or trade school, if you are working on your academic career goals, an unexpected pregnancy can raise questions.

How will you be able to stay on track? Can you graduate on time? What about your finances?

Keep reading to learn more about your options, student rights, and some helpful perspectives.

Your Options

While navigating pregnancy during school isn’t easy, it’s important to remember that school will not last forever. Research each option, list the pros and cons, and try to visualize your life after choosing each one.

You owe it to yourself to make an educated and empowered choice, not one based on fear of the future. We’re here to help you along the way.

Your Rights

Under Title IX, you have rights as a pregnant student and protection from discrimination at school. Title IX applies to any public or private school, school district, college, or university receiving federal funds.

Your school must:

  • Allow you to participate in classes and extracurricular activities.
  • Provide you with reasonable pregnancy adjustments, such as a larger desk, elevator access, more trips to the restroom, etc.
  • Excuse medically necessary absences related to pregnancy or childbirth.
  • Allow you to return to the same academic or extracurricular status as before you were out.
  • Give you an opportunity to make up any missed work.
  • Protect you from harassment.

Talk to your school’s guidance counselor to learn how your school can support you as you continue your education.

Keep Everything in Perspective

Remember that your situation will change over time. Your finances and circumstances will be very different as you graduate or start a new job.

Also, if you’re in high school, it can be challenging to navigate the social dynamics. However, you may only see a few classmates after graduation. Many will move away or attend different colleges, so take a deep breath and remind yourself of this reality.
